VANCOUVER LABOR DAY INVITATIONAL –
2012
The Inter-City Labor Day Invitational this year was hosted by the
Vancouver Chinese Golf Club. The event was held at the two
Northview championship courses, Ridge and Canal, in Surrey,
B.C. The four northwest clubs consisting of Portland,
Victoria, Seattle Cascade and Vancouver alternate the Labor Day
Invitational each year.
This year’s 131 players enjoyed meeting new friends and renewed
old acquaintances with players from 16 Federation clubs attending
the golf and social festivities. Players came from as far as
Hawaii, San Diego and Tucson. The Friday night registration
at the Sandman Airport Hotel in Richmond included a tremendous
spread and for many sufficed for dinner. The Awards Banquet
at the Fisherman’s Terrace Restaurant in the new Aberdeen Mall in
Richmond included a sumptuous 12 course dinner followed by live
entertainment with a few lively dancers!
At the Awards Banquet an eloquent memorial was made by George Yen
on behalf of Wayne Wong who died earlier this year. Wayne
was a long time member of the Vancouver Club and was past
president and served on the club’s board for many years. His
service to the club, as well as the community, will be long
remembered.
The golfers were divided between the two courses for the 36-hole
event that saw five winners, two gross and three nets, in each of
the four men’s and two women’s flights. The Canal Course’s
greens were very tricky and hard to read whereas on the Ridge
Course the high number of three putts was understandable with some
four and five putts reported. The traditional Inter-City
4-Team Challenge, the Federation sponsored Senior Event, KPs
(closest to the pin), and KLs (Closest to the line) winners
rounded out the golfing activities.
Thanks to President and General Chairman Gene Wong and his
terrific committees for their time and efforts in presenting a
great invitational event!
