OAKLAND-RENO INVITATIONAL
July 11-14, 2010

Although the turnout wasn’t as large as expected, there was plenty to do for those that made it to Reno on July 11 – 14, 2010.  With very nice sunny weather, except for the winds, the scores were very low at the first round played at the beautiful d’Andrea GC.  The Somersett Country Club, however, was a different story with some players ballooning up to 20 strokes more.  With the combination of the winds and blind shots that ended up in hazards, the 59 players were glad to finish.

The Silver Legacy Casino Hotel was the base for the fun package with several people opting out to their own accommodations.  The welcoming open house with the open bar and very impressive hors d’oeurvres was good enough for dinner for many.  The awards dinner served nice cuts of prime rib and roast chicken.

The club traditionally has hosted this invitational on a biennial basis during the July Fourth weekend with the last one held in 2004 in the wine country.  After a six year absence, the club decided to gamble on a Reno event as a change on scenery.  Adding the country club was a bonus, but having to play it during a weekday may have discouraged many people who wanted to save their vacation days.  The feedback from those who attended, however, was very positive.

The traditional gold platter awards were impressive and of course, easy to take home.  With two men’s flights and one ladies flight, it was like winning the gold.  Tournament Chairman Joe Young and his capable committee of ladies did an excellent job with the event and awarding close to 50 terrific raffle prizes.  Club members did an excellent job in rounding up tee prizes!  Thanks also go to Steve Vines from Los Angeles who is the perennial “Side Bet” organizer for those best nine-hole scores.
