The Indian summer came early for the Cascade Club’s Labor Day
event that was held in the Tacoma area. An unusual plus 80
degree weather greeted the over 130 golfers from Friday through
Monday and even lasted a few days following Labor Day.
The venues offered this year gave opportunities to test out Chambers Bay the site of the 2015 U.S. Open or a free practice round of golf at Allenmore Golf Course on Friday and the 36 hole medal play at Trophy Lake & Casting Club and Washington National Golf Club played on Saturday and Sunday respectively. Although rod and reels were offered at Trophy Lakes, no would be old salts were seen trying their luck at casting? On Friday, there were over 30 players at Allenmore where Dave Jung from Vancouver scored an ace and over 40 players at Chambers Bay.
The medal play courses played tough with only a handful of players netting less than par and where local knowledge really played a tremendous part in shooting a good or bad score. Trophy Lakes was the tougher of the two courses as most people shot better on Washington National. There were gross score improvements of 19 and 17 strokes on Sunday, but neither of those ended up winners!
The center of activities was at the La Quinta Inn and Suites in Tacoma where the host club set up their Hospitality Room and registration. With an open bar and some very delicious hors d’oeuvres, an outside dinner was out of the question. The BBQ pork was to die for and the Hospitality Room was open all weekend! The festivities were culminated at the Muckleshoot Casino Banquet Room where about 160 players and guests had a well presented buffet dinner. President Bob Tordillos and his committee members Larry Luke, Norman Locke and Aiko Tada, to name a few, should be congratulated on a very well planned and successful tournament!
As part of the Saturday round at Trophy Lakes, there was the Federation Team Matches (FTM) and Inter-city Team Challenge (ITC). The former had eight five-player teams and the latter had four five-player Inter-City teams playing for the annual trophy. Taking the best four nets, the Oakland team came in first followed by the Dragons and Hawaii in the FTM. Seattle won the ITC using a player from each of the flights.
There were only 19 players who were proud enough to indicate eligibility as a senior to compete in the Federation sponsored Senior Event. Senior winners for men and women are selected after the flight winners have been recognized. Since the Senior Event winners were not determined at the awards dinner, the winners were Al Lim from Oakland and Gordon Gatehouse from Hawaii winning first and second nets respectively. First and second net women were Shirley Lee and Judy Eng both from Oakland.
